Mobile product image gallery: full-width + tap-to-zoom viewer

SUMMARY
On mobile product pages, the image carousel supports swipe between images, but the images are displayed smaller than necessary and cannot be opened for closer inspection. This makes it hard to evaluate products where details matter.

PROBLEM (CURRENT BEHAVIOR)
1) The carousel does not use full viewport width on mobile.

  • There is unused space on the left and right.
  • Images appear smaller than they need to be.

2) Images are not tappable to open a larger preview.

  • No “tap to open” expanded view.
  • No pinch-to-zoom or pan.
  • Users cannot inspect fine details.

IMPACT

  • Customers can miss important details, reducing purchase confidence.
  • This is below typical mobile ecommerce expectations (tap image -> full-screen viewer -> pinch/zoom -> close).
  • Likely hurts conversion for visually detailed products (printables, diagrams, UI-heavy assets, etc.).

REQUESTED IMPROVEMENTS
A) Full-width gallery on mobile

  • Make the gallery/carousel span the full screen width (100% viewport width) on mobile breakpoints.
  • Reduce/remove side padding/margins that create dead space.
  • Keep aspect ratio consistent, but maximize displayed image size.

B) Tap-to-open zoomable image viewer (lightbox-style)

  • Tap any carousel image to open a full-screen overlay viewer.
  • Support pinch-to-zoom, double-tap to zoom (optional), and pan when zoomed.
  • Include a clear close control (X) and return to the same image index on close.
  • Optional: allow swipe left/right in the overlay to move between images.

ACCEPTANCE CRITERIA
1) Mobile gallery uses full viewport width on iOS Safari and Android Chrome.
2) Tapping an image opens an overlay viewer.
3) Pinch-to-zoom and pan work reliably.
4) Closing the viewer returns to the product page at the same carousel position.
